INDOOR CAT CARE

“In ancient times cats were worshipped as gods; they have not forgotten this.”

– Terry Pratchett

When you own a cat that stays mainly indoors, you need to focus on a few things: food, water, entertainment and grooming.

food

For food, you would need to provide food that is mostly protein whether its poultry or red meat. According to the ASPCA, “We recommend purchasing high-quality, brand-name kitten or cat food. Your veterinarian will be able to assess your new cat or kitten and determine the best diet. Factors such as age, activity level and health makes a difference in what and how much a cat should eat. Cats require taurine, an essential amino acid, for heart and eye health. The food you choose should be balanced for the life stage of your cat or kitten. Properly balanced foods will contain taurine.”

water

You need to give them fresh water everyday. Whenever it’s empty, you need to refill their water bowl. Even if the water bowl isn’t empty, always aim to change it daily to maintain cleanliness. When picking a bowl for your cat, try to get something easy to clean and is shallow enough for your cat to drink out of.

entertainment

Cats really like staring out the window. It’s like their TV! So try to have the curtains or blinds open for them to look at and a seat for them to lay on. Another way to entertain your indoor cat is to have scratch posts, feather toys, and even another cat to play! However, introducing another cat into the picture might complicate things around the household. Just make sure to take it easy when introducing the two cats.

grooming

There are a couple rules when grooming your cat and it depends on the length of their fur. When they are a short-haired cat, you should comb their hair weekly. When it’s a long-haired cat, comb their fur daily because it tangles constantly. For your comb, make sure it's suited mainly for cats and the bristles are close to each other to grab more fur.

bathroom

All indoor cats must have a place to go to the bathroom. You can buy inexpensive cat litter at your local grocery store and buy a container for your cat. Make sure the cat litter isn't to harsh on your cats paws because they are very sensitive to those kinds of things. Make sure the cat litter is soft and not rugged.
